Alaa Abdel Fattah
Egyptian blogger, programmer and human rights activist
Born on November 18, 1981
He is being held in custody pending case 1356 of 2019 in Tora High Security Prison 2, known as “Scorpion” prison.
Alaa Abdel Fattah is known for defending human rights in Egypt. He is the author of one of the most popular critical and interactive blogs for independent news, which served as a space for alternative expression during the pre-revolutionary period. In recognition of his valuable work as blogger, he was awarded the "Reporters without Borders" award and the "German Deutsche Welle" prize.
As a human rights and pro-democracy activist, he emerged as one of most prominent figures in the January 25th Revolution, and his contribution was recognized in the Egyptian constitution. However, just like other Egyptian activists and researchers, Alaa did not escape the wave of arbitrary arrests which followed the coup in 2013. He was arrested on November 28, 2013 in relation to the events of the Shura Council protests, and sentenced to 5 years.
After serving the sentence, he was released under police surveillance and forced to spend 12 hours in Dokki Police Station every day for 5 years.
While held under police surveillance in September 2019, he was arrested again and a new case was filed against him, this time with accusations of publishing false news and joining an illegal group, all despite him respecting the restrictions imposed by the police surveillance measures.
To date, he is held in custody pending his case in Scorpion Prison. It has been reported that during the last investigation session on March 14, 2021, activist Alaa Abdel Fattah's detention was renewed for 45 days pending investigation, although the State Security Prosecution or National Security Investigations did not provide any evidence to prove the validity of the accusations against him.
