Esraa Abdel Fattah

she is remanded in custody pending case 488 of 2019 and Case 855 of 2020 in Qanater Women Prison.
Esraa Abdel Fattah was known for her advocacy of political rights, freedoms and freedom of expression in Egypt before the January revolution, as she was one of the first participants in the call for the April 6th strike against the corruption of the regime in solidarity with Egyptian workers. After taking part in the strike, she was one of the founders of the April 6th Youth Movement and one of the advocates of the January 25 Revolution.
Esraa won the New Democratic Generation Activist Award from the Freedom House Foundation and was among the nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 due to her peaceful political activism in Egypt.
In the period after June 30, 2013, Esraa was forbidden from engaging in political work and her activities were limited to supporting freedom of the press, monitoring violations against journalists and demanding the journalists' rights in Egypt. Even so, just like all the other activists who took part in the 2011 Revolution, she did not escape the wave of arrests which followed the coup: Esraa Abdel Fattah was arrested on October 13, 2019, during the crackdown following the September events. Despite having had no role in the demonstrations of September 2019, she was accused of joining an illegal group, publishing false news, and misusing social media in Case No. 488 of 2019.
On August 31, 2020, Esraa was accused of joining an illegal group in a new case, the No. 855 of 2020, despite having not been released from jail since the previous autumn.
To date, she is remanded in custody pending her case in Qanater Prison, and it has been reported that during the last investigation session on 3 March 2021, activist Esraa Abdel Fattah’s detention was renewed for 45 days pending investigation, although the State Security Prosecution or National Security Investigations did not provide any evidence to prove the validity of the accusations against her.
