Muhammad Al-Baqer
Lawyer, human rights defender and director of the Adalah Center for Rights and Freedoms, He was born in 1980.
He is remanded in custody pending cases 1356 of 2019 and 855 of 2020 in Tora High Security Prison 2, known as the Scorpion Prison.
Muhammad al-Baqer was known for defending human rights in Egypt, and one of the first lawyers to volunteer to defend civilians under military trial after the January revolution. Because of his activities, the Law Society in Britain nominated lawyer Muhammad Al-Baqer for its annual human rights award.
He is also the director of the Adalah Center for Rights and Freedoms, which provides legal aid to political detainees, promotes civil and political rights in Egypt, sheds light on the agency of the criminal justice system and on legal protection for refugees and migrants.
Because of his influential human rights activities inside Egypt, he was arrested during the course of the court proceeding against activist Alaa Abdel Fattah on September 29, 2019, and accused of publishing false news and joining an illegal group in Case No. 1356 of 2019, the same case against his defendee Alaa Abdel-Fattah. He was remanded in custody in the notorious Scorpion Prison, and on August 31, 2020, he was charged in a new case, the No. 855 of 2020, and accused of joining an illegal group despite his presence in the prison.
To date, he remains in custody in Scorpion Prison, and it has been reported that during the course the last investigation session on March 1, 2021, the detention of lawyer Muhammad Al-Baqer was renewed for 45 days pending investigation, although the State Security Prosecution or National Security Investigations did not provide any evidence to prove the validity of the accusations against him.
